Save the Deer with New Arc Wildlife Centre
Red deer are the largest mammals in the UK. Male red deer, or stags, can keep growing until they weigh up to 240 kg. At this point, they can stand about 1.2 meters tall at the shoulder. They also grow impressive antlers that can span over a meter wide. Their antlers are made of bone and therefore cannot be classified as horns. They shed every year and regrow, getting larger each year. This is another reason they’re not horns because horns are permanent.
Interestingly, red deer calves are born with spots as a way to camouflage from potential predators. Their coat gets darker as they grow, with the spots totally disappearing immediately after they get their first winter coat. Just like lions, red deer stags are known for their loud roars. These bellows are common during the autumn mating season, also called the rut. Stags use their roars to establish dominance and attract females. They can be heard from up to two miles away!
We’re happy to report that red deer are not endangered or threatened. They are listed under the Least Concern category by the IUCN. That said, it is essential to manage their population in the Scottish Highlands to maintain ecosystem balance.
The North Arc Wildlife Rescue is the largest wildlife rescue centre in the North-East of Scotland. They take in large numbers of orphaned or injured wildlife, including red deer, every year from all over the North-East of Scotland. Unfortunately, a lot of deer rescue end sadly as they are too badly injured. However, the NAWR always strives to get any recoverable deer back to the wild to continue their wild journeys!
