red crab open the sand

There are over 700 species of crab in the world that belong to over 100 families. The smallest crab is the pea crab which is about the size of a small coin. The largest species is called the Japanese spider crab which can grow to become 3.7 meters across and live up to 100 years! Crabs are essential to the ocean ecosystem because they help keep the macroalgae population in check. This helps prevent coral reefs from being smothered by them, allowing them to thrive and support multiple sea animals. Crabs are also one of the main decomposers in the ocean. They harvest decomposing plant and animal matter from the ocean floor and help to keep it clean.

Some crab species are listed as endangered by IUCN while others have their populations declining at an alarming rate. This is because of factors like habitat loss, where there’s a decrease in sea grass and other crab food because of global warming, pollution and irregular weather patterns caused by climate change. Overfishing is another concerning factor as humans harvest crabs that aren’t fully mature or are carrying eggs. This denies crabs the chance to reproduce optimally and complete their life cycle.
