The Seal Research Trust is a multi award-winning, evidence-based conservation charity. They support a large network of active volunteer citizen scientists who routinely survey seals along the UK coast.

Seals are ‘sentinels of the sea’ - showing us where there are issues due to disturbance, prey depletion and shifts, bycatch and entanglement, habitat loss, pollution and, of course, climate change. Thriving seas are essential to make the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat and water we drink. They are also a globally rare marine wildlife tourist attraction, helping to diversify coastal economic prosperity.

Protecting seals protects our environment, health, wellbeing and economy, sustaining our lives and futures.

How the Seal Research Trust collect essential data

The Seal Research Trust volunteer citizen scientists are amazing. As a community they undertake a huge range of activities, including being eyes/ears on their stretch of coast; alerting us to changes; surveying wildlife; making and confirming seal IDs; digitising, analysing and reporting on our data; fundraising; as well as being ambassadors/champions for seals!

Seal ID

Each seal has a unique fur pattern that enables it to be identified throughout its life, in fact many seals are named by volunteers based on what they ‘see’ in the fur - for example they have a seal called Shadow puppet, who has been recorded since 2000. They hold photo identification catalogues for multiple sites, enabling them to identify seal movements across the Celtic Sea and beyond. Every seal ID requires 5 exact pattern matches, in the same relative position, with the rest of the seal being consistent. The Seal Research Trust now have over 1.5 million photos from over 63,000 surveys creating over 150,000 seal IDs!
