Slow lorises are small, nocturnal primates found in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. With their large round eyes and gentle movements, they are among the most distinctive and endearing animals in the region. However, behind their charming appearance lies a troubling reality. Slow lorises are one of the most heavily trafficked primates in the world, facing constant threats from the illegal pet trade, habitat destruction, and hunting.

These animals play an important role in maintaining the health of tropical ecosystems. As they feed on insects, fruit, and tree sap, they help control insect populations and contribute to forest regeneration by dispersing seeds. Sadly, their slow and trusting nature makes them easy targets for poachers. Many are captured and sold in wildlife markets, often after having their teeth cruelly removed to make them “safer” pets. This practice causes immense suffering and often leads to infection or death.

In addition to the illegal wildlife trade, deforestation poses a serious threat to the survival of slow lorises. Expanding agriculture, palm oil plantations, and human development continue to destroy their natural habitat. As forests disappear, these primates lose the trees they rely on for food, shelter, and safety. Without protection, their numbers will continue to decline across Indonesia and beyond.

Slow Loris

International Animal Rescue is a global charity that works to protect and rehabilitate slow lorises and other animals affected by cruelty and exploitation. Their specialist rescue centre in Indonesia provides urgent care for slow lorises that have been seized from wildlife traffickers or surrendered by owners. Once they have recovered, the animals are released into protected forest reserves where they can live freely in the wild once again. The charity also runs education programmes to raise awareness about the illegal pet trade and campaigns to reduce deforestation and wildlife exploitation.

The work of International Animal Rescue is vital in saving slow lorises from extinction. Through rescue, rehabilitation, and education, they are addressing both the symptoms and the causes of animal suffering. Their efforts help ensure that these gentle primates can continue to thrive in the wild where they belong.
