Save the Ospreys with Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust
Ospreys are one of the UKâs most spectacular birds of prey, known for their sharp eyesight, distinctive white underparts, and remarkable fishing skills. These magnificent birds migrate thousands of miles each year, travelling between Africa and the UK to breed during the summer months. After being driven to extinction in England during the 19th century, ospreys have made a successful comeback thanks to dedicated conservation work, but their population remains small and carefully monitored.
Ospreys are skilled hunters that rely entirely on fish for food, often seen diving dramatically into lakes and reservoirs to catch their prey. They play an important role in maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems by helping to regulate fish populations. However, despite their recovery, ospreys still face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and disturbance at nesting sites. Continued conservation efforts are vital to ensure that these birds can thrive safely across the UK.
The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust has played a leading role in the successful reintroduction and protection of ospreys in England. In partnership with the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, the Trust launched the Rutland Osprey Project in the 1990s, re-establishing a breeding population at Rutland Water Nature Reserve. Since then, dozens of chicks have been raised and released, with some returning to breed in other parts of the country.
The work of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust goes beyond reintroduction. The Trust continues to monitor osprey nests, protect breeding sites, and educate the public about the importance of preserving these incredible birds. Their efforts have not only restored a once-lost species to Englandâs skies but have also inspired similar conservation projects across the UK.
Supporting the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust helps safeguard the future of ospreys and other native wildlife. Their ongoing research, education, and habitat protection work ensure that future generations can continue to witness the awe-inspiring sight of ospreys soaring over British waters.
