Orca surfacing in the water

Orcas found in the waters around the Hebrides belong to a rare and critically endangered group known as the West Coast Community. Once a larger population, this unique group has declined over time and is now on the brink of disappearing entirely.

Today, only two individuals remain, John Coe and Aquarius. These two adult males are the last known members of this community. They are most often seen in waters along Scotland’s west coast, including around the Hebrides, sometimes travelling together and sometimes separately.

Unlike most orca populations, there are no females left in this group, meaning it can no longer reproduce. No calves have been recorded for decades, and the population is now considered functionally extinct. John Coe and Aquarius are believed to feed mainly on marine mammals, placing them high in the food chain.

One of the biggest threats they face is pollution. Toxic chemicals such as PCBs accumulate in top predators like orcas and can have severe long-term health effects. These pollutants are widely believed to have played a major role in the decline of this population. Disturbance from boats and changes in prey availability may also impact their survival.

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust works to protect whales, dolphins, and porpoises in Scottish waters. Through research, education, and community sightings, they collect valuable data on species like John Coe and Aquarius while promoting the protection of marine habitats.

At Bare Kind, 10% of the profits from each pair of orca socks goes to the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, supporting their conservation work and helping raise awareness of the final two members of this extraordinary orca community.
